Job Description

If you are looking to spend a season living and working in one of Canada’s top world-class ski resorts, but are not confident in your abilities as a ski instructor, then this could be the role for you.

Whistler Kids is the Whistler Blackcomb Ski School designed for children aged 3-11. While the ski instructors work on the slopes representing the face of the ski school, the support staff work behind the scenes to form its essential backbone. These are the people who keep everyone happy by preparing the food, clearing the nursery slopes and keeping the Kids Zones safe.

If you are excited by the idea of working in the fast-paced environment of Whistler Kids and have experience working with children, but are not a skier, then we have a limited number of support roles available.

What does the job involve?

There are three different types of support role available at Whistler Kids. You could work as a Kitchen Assistant in the ski school kitchen, work as an Outdoor Ranger to keep the Kids Zones safe and fun, or work directly with children off the slopes as a Den Master, helping to keep them motivated and happy.

Kitchen Assistant:
Kitchen Assistants help to prepare the lunches for the children and staff each day. You will be working in all roles within the kitchen including basic food preparation, dish-washing, setting up and clearing tables and serving food.

Outdoor Ranger:
Outdoor Rangers maintain and supervise the two adventure play parks at Whistler Kids. Their role is to keep all of the Whistler Kids areas safe and fun.

Work starts early in the morning to set up equipment on the nursery slopes and clear snow in the parks. Your day will be based outdoors and will combine manual labour and working with children.

Den Master:
Den Masters help instructors look after children who are upset, need the loo or do not want to ski – it tends to be the 3-5 year olds who struggle the most. Your role will be to cheer up the kids with games, smiles and laughter when they are brought inside, so that they can head back onto the mountain.

The children need to be spending most of their time out on the slopes (this is what their parents have paid for after all), so this role is not one of full time ‘day care’. When all of the children are happy, den masters can get involved in the other support roles – helping out in the kitchen or supervising children on the nursery slopes.

All three roles are full time, but your weekly working hours will vary according to the demand for ski lessons in the resort. During peak times, such as Christmas, you may be working 6-7 days a week, while in quieter periods you may only be working 2-3. You can expect an average of 4 -5 days or 32 hours a week across the season.

You will be living in the Whistler Blackcomb staff housing. These self-contained flats contain two bedrooms and sleep up to four people, so you should expect to share a room. You will receive a meal on the days that you are working, but will be self-catering for the rest of the time. The cost of the accommodation (about $12 per night) will be deducted from your pay cheque.

The season for Whistler Kids generally finishes in mid-April, but the exact date will depend on how good the snow is! We end our programme at the end of April to give you some time to enjoy relaxing in the spring sunshine after all of your hard work.

Who would be suitable?

For all of the Whistler Kids support roles you will need to have a cheery, positive disposition, a willingness to learn and a big smile for the kids and staff alike.

If you are seeking a role as a Kitchen Assistant, having previous experience working around food is an asset, but not essential.

To be a candidate for the Outdoor Ranger role, you need to have previous experience working with children, be at least an intermediate skier/snowboarder (you will need to be able to transfer equipment between locations), have an excellent awareness of safety and have previous outdoor/manual work experience.

To work as a Den Master, you need to have good experience of working with young children in a nursery or crèche setting. The more experience you have the better!

What’s included?

- Access to your own personal ‘My Oyster’ account and excellent preparation and support from Oyster throughout the whole process, including a one-to-one interview and informal briefing.
- A UK briefing day covering childcare issues, work advice and a meeting with a senior manager from Whistler Kids.
- Transport from the airport on arrival and accommodation in a central Vancouver hostel on your first night.
- Assistance organising your Social Insurance Number and bank account, and support from our Whistler representative, including regular social meetings.
- Organisation of staff accommodation before arrival (free during the Whistler University course and then about $12 per night).
- Full season ski pass, with staff discounts, once you begin your job.
