Job Description

Spend a winter or summer season working in hospitality in a hotel in the Canadian Rockies. With a job guaranteed before you leave home, this is the perfect opportunity for you to earn money to finance a brilliant season exploring the slopes of this famous mountain region. Benefit from a season’s ski pass in winter, allowing you to make the most of this awesome ski resort, while in summer enjoy being out amongst the lakes, peaks and forests of the great Canadian outdoors.

What does the job involve?

Once you have been accepted onto our programme, you can relax in the knowledge that you will have a guaranteed job lined up for you when you get out to Canada. Whilst the exact role cannot be confirmed until a couple of months before departure, you should expect an entry level role in the hotel industry. This type of work typically includes:

- Housekeeping: cleaning the guests’ bedrooms and the public areas in the hotel.

- Kitchen and restaurant: working behind the scenes as a dishwasher or busser in the restaurant, clearing tables and re-stocking cutlery.

If you impress your employers, and prove yourself to be willing and able, the opportunity for promotion may arise, and you could end up in a front of house role such as bar tending or on reception.

Applicants with previous experience working in hospitality may secure a job in another hotel department, although this cannot be guaranteed.

Your job will be full time, and you will be working an average of 5 days a week. The nature of working in a tourist resort means that your working hours will vary according to the number of guests staying at that particular time. During the Christmas peak period, you may be working 6 or 7 days a week, while in quieter times, you may only have 2-3 days work. During the busy summer period from mid-June to early September, you should expect to work at least 5 days a week.

You should expect to earn around $10 per hour and be paid fortnightly. The cost of your accommodation (about 1 hour of pay per night) will be taken directly from your pay cheque, leaving you with money to spend on food and a great social life!

Your employer will organise your accommodation either on site at the hotel, or within walking distance. Staff housing tends to be basic, but perfectly adequate for your needs. You will be self-catering and should expect to share a room with at least one other person.

The winter season runs from late November to late May, while the summer season runs from mid-May through to mid-September. Many people choose to extend their time in Canada and stay on for the following summer or winter season.

Who would be suitable?

The standards amongst our Canadian employers are very high, and to do well in your position you need to be punctual, stick to a dress code, and be genuinely friendly and courteous to guests. A positive attitude and a commitment to hard work are also necessary – having a ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality is the best approach.

What’s included?

- Access to your own personal ‘My Oyster’ account and excellent preparation and support from Oyster throughout the whole process, including a one-to-one interview and informal briefing.

- A hotel-based UK briefing day covering hotel issues and work advice.

- Finding you a suitable job, including liaising with hotels and obtaining job offer letters. Please be aware that some hotels may conduct their own telephone interviews.

- Transport from the airport on arrival to your accommodation in The Rockies.

- Assistance organising your Social Insurance Number and bank account, and support from our Rockies representative, including regular social meetings.

- Guaranteed staff accommodation (the cost of rent is taken directly from your pay cheque).

- Season long mid-week ski pass for Mount Norquay (if working during winter).
