Job Description

To support the physical development and healthy lifestyles of all our children, Berwick St Mary’s is looking to recruit a PE Apprentice who has background in sports and a passion to work with staff and children to promote the opportunities of a healthy life style can bring. Working alongside a committed team the correct candidate will be working with children from Early Years to Year 4 helping to support their physical and social development, therefore some experience of participation in a range of sports, as well as possible coaching of younger children would be beneficial.



Main Duties of the Post:



Under the instruction/guidance of senior staff to provide Physical Education (PE) support within school. Responsible under the direction of the Head teacher or any other nominated person. Duties will include supporting the schools in all areas of PE during lessons and the promotion of outdoor learning. Supporting staff in delivering outdoor learning through encouraging physical play. Leading & organising games during breaks, lunch times and after-school clubs. Setting up and co-ordinating the equipment required for PE activities. Duties also include maintaining the general upkeep of equipment, PE store areas and reporting damaged equipment/organising for restock/repair.



Responsibilities to other staff



  • To ensure support to classes within the area of PE and physical development across the school.

  • Support staff in the organisation of games events, focus on lunch times, playtimes and school clubs.

  • To support with the maintenance and smooth running of the PE activities across the site.

  • To work with the staff within school and assist in the organisation of inclusive activities promoting physical development and sport.


Responsibilities to the school



  • Class Support

  • Support students across the school in curricular time as part of Physical Development in Early years and the Core PE programme in Key Stage 1 and 2

  • Support staff during break times and lunchtimes in the leading of sporting/games activities

  • Support with planning and delivery of Physical Education and Sport activities during lesson, break and lunch times.

  • Managing the Sports Resources, setting up for lessons etc.

  • To undertake other duties as reasonably correspond to the general character of the post and its level of responsibility


Extra-Curricular Programme Support



  • Support with extra curricular activities as required.

  • Assist Sports Co-ordinators with school festivals/events and in delivery of programmes

Skills Required :

  • Good literacy and numeracy skills

  • Works well as a member of a team



Future Prospects : To have the opportunity to work towards Level 3 in Support Teaching and Learning
