Job Description
The Purchasing team at Rolls-Royce shapes future spends that stretch into the billions. So on an Internship here you can expect to work on big projects. You’ll build relationships that get the best from global suppliers, collaborate with leading engineers and work with international teams to make improvements at every stage of our purchasing processes. It’s an exciting place to launch your ideas, ambitions and aspirations. That’s because, as well as taking real accountability on live projects, you’ll be empowered to share your ideas about how we can excel in absolutely everything we do. Here, you can make a difference – and be proud of it.
The programme
The Purchasing Internship is a challenging and rewarding introduction to a career in purchasing. One that will see you enjoy responsibility on a variety of projects and gain exposure to the breadth of what our Purchasing team accomplishes. You’ll complete two placements that will see you partner with experts from across the business as you learn what it means to work in areas like Buying, Value Improvement and Forward Sourcing. However, you won’t just work alongside highly qualified professionals and develop your strategic and stakeholder management skills. You’ll also gain a technical understanding of our manufacturing and engineering operations, experience how our international business works together, and come to understand the important part Purchasing plays in all of it.
What you’ll do
The exact scope of what you’ll achieve will depend on where your placements take you. If you join in Value Improvement, for example, you will develop the skills to understand what drives the cost of the parts we buy and use that to maximise the value of our spend. That will mean learning about manufacturing processes, cost modelling and developing an ability to read engineering drawings. Conversely, if you take on a Buying role, you’re likely to be responsible for a group of suppliers. So you can expect to develop negotiation and supplier management skills, influence commodity strategy and work across functions to deliver goals. Wherever you work, you’ll take real ownership of your projects and be accountable for successful delivery.
What you’ll need
We’re looking for people who’ll make an impact and share their ideas about how we can do things even better, so we’ll want to see great communication skills developed through well-rounded life experience – academically, socially and in any previous work situations. Your pre-university academic record will be strong, with A-levels (or equivalent) at grade B or above in subjects like Business Studies, Economics, Politics and Psychology. You should also be on course to achieve at least a 2:1 degree, or a comparable qualification. Flexibility is important too, as you could be based at any of our sites. Ambitious and driven, you’ll be excited about the fact that this internship could lead to a place on our graduate programme.
