“Being part of something that is bigger than yourself. Feeling powerful as a group. Collectively knowing you are making a difference and being part of a bigger cause. These are all the reasons I have loved City Year.” Shakela Uddin, Former corps member

Monday to Thursday is spent in school supporting and equipping children with what they need to learn and succeed. Corps members are uniquely well-placed to create meaningful relationships with children who need help to do well at school. They spend large amounts of time with pupils inside and outside the classroom, are nearer in age than most teaching staff and often share life experiences.
Corps members bring a new perspective to learning and doing well in life and are perceived as cool and fun.
This will involve serving with like-minded peers to:

- Provide 1:1 support in class.
- Become role models and an integral part of the school team; Provide one to one mentoring and tutoring support – e.g. helping children progress with their reading;
- Assisting teachers in the classroom – e.g. acting as the eyes and ears for teachers or concentrating on a small group of focus children;
- Run workshops on important social issues, such as poverty, health and respect; and Organising and leading community action projects, stimulating wider community involvement – e.g. transforming an old derelict playground into a safe and new environment.
Corps members embody a powerful culture of civic idealism and professionalism, which runs through everything they do.
- Corps members boost pupils’ confidence and learning;
- Children who work intensively with corps members make more progress than other children in their class;
- The more time children spend with corps members, the more progress they make;
