Job Description

A number of opportunities have arisen within this successful institution for intermediate level apprentices, to train to become Heating & Ventilation Service & Maintenance Engineers.



The role of a Service and Maintenance Engineer is to develop specialist skills in monitoring, repairing and maintaining building services equipment relating to heating, ventilation, lighting, electrical, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Engineers develop skills in maintaining systems and their component parts including isolating, diagnosing, and rectifying faults. This will involve working on projects within industrial and commercial properties and structures such as schools, hospitals, shops, retail developments, etc.



A Service and Maintenance Engineer may work on a large static site, or be mobile in a van and when qualified, may be involved in 24 hour call out  when a system is not working whatever time of day, then an engineer will need to respond to the call out, and ensure the system is back working as quickly as possible. This may involve travelling from site to site across the country.



While working on projects, engineers are required to be aware of the health and safety of the client and their customers. Projects may involve stripping out old systems and replacing them with new equipment, while working with the associated hazards.



Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage:

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices is currently 2.68, for young people aged 16-18 and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. From October 2014, the NMW will rise to 2.73. The NMW applies to time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the Apprenticeship. Anyone not covered by the age category above will be entitled to the NMW appropriate to their age. Many employers offer a wage above the NMW.
Personal Qualities : Applicants should be able to:

* Show a willingness to learn and apply the knowledge gained within the workplace

* Demonstrate motivation to succeed within the industry/sector

* Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with a range of people

* To show careful thought and consideration when working on own initiative or in a team, especially in difficult situations and be able to take responsibility when the need arise

* Demonstrate potential to complete the qualifications which are part of the apprenticeship programme

* Demonstrate excellent timekeeping skills

Skills Required : Applicants will be required to demonstrate:

* Good numeracy and literacy ability

* Good communication skills

* A keen interest in building design and sustainable/environmental issues

* An interest in Technology

* An aptitude for technical subjects or be practically orientated

* An ability to analyse and solve problems including in a practical hands-on approach

Future Prospects : Once qualified as a Service and Maintenance Engineer, the candidate will have the prospects of earning a competitive salary and there may be further opportunities available to further their studies. There will be further opportunities for career progression to Senior Engineer status, or indeed Contract Manager status.
