Job Description

The Civil Service is responsible for both formulating central government policy and then implementing it by providing services direct to the public. We have 420,000 people working in a huge range of government departments and agencies.

We deliver support and benefits; help jobseekers find work or retrain; support farmers and fisheries, industry and manufacturing; and provide vital support for our armed forces and peace keeping operations.
We promote UK industry in missions overseas, attract investment to the UK and help UK citizens in distress abroad.
We oversee the police and judicial systems and control our borders; we are responsible for schools and education, for setting health service priorities, for our railways, roads and air services.
We regulate some of the biggest industries that affect everyone's lives and we help build cohesive communities.
We manage our taxation system, support small businesses and promote our economy and jobs.
We work to respond to climate change, counter terrorism, and manage the impact of the global economy.

Civil servants are administrators and policy makers, and they deliver crucial services directly to the public. Some of them are economists, statisticians, researchers, scientists, engineers, HR professionals, experts in technology and many other professions.

The Civil Service plays an important role in British life by making sure that Government policy is carried out. Although it serves the government of the day, it is politically independent. The majority of civil servants have a direct influence on life in Britain, implementing what we call "operational delivery", which includes administration of pensions, controlling borders, running courts, and so on.

As well as implementing policy, civil servants also offer support and advice on policy-making to ministers.

The Civil Service is currently undergoing a range of far-reaching reforms, with the aim of building a more skilled, digital and unif

Everything about this programme is designed to help you develop the experience and skills judged to be the most important for future leaders.

Exactly which department, or departments, you work in will depend on a range of factors, including the particular Fast Stream you are in. We can't take account of personal preferences, but wherever you are based you can expect outstanding development opportunities. This is reflected in the official title of Fast Streamers in the Civil Service: Higher Executive Officer (Development). And don?t expect to specialise in one area or one kind of work - the Fast Stream provides a very varied set of experiences.

More and more, Fast Streamers take on roles involving direct contact with the public. Insight into the policy-making process is valuable and enhanced by experiencing for yourself how a policy is received by the public, and the impact it makes on their lives.

Operational work is about providing high-quality and efficient public services direct to citizens. For example, you might run a court or the border control at a busy airport.

Policy involves formulating and evaluating government strategy, initiatives and projects. It requires research, analysis, presentation of objectively balanced evidence and close collaboration. For example, you might work as part of a Bill team, framing legislation then helping to steer it through Parliament.

Corporate services include specialist functions such as HR, finance, procurement, communications and IT within government departments. You might coordinate budgets in a tight fiscal environment, or maximise value for money through bulk purchasing strategies.

Fast Streamers can come from any background, with any kind of degree

Having said that, there are some key qualities that we look for in all our Fast Streamers:

Setting direction

This means being innovative and always looking for opportunities to improve what we do, and working in smarter, more focused ways. You will show clarity of thought - using sound judgement, evidence and knowledge to provide accurate, informed and professional advice. It's all about focusing your contribution on the activities which will meet Civil Service goals and deliver the greatest value.

Engaging people

You will lead from the front, communicating with clarity, conviction and enthusiasm. To do this you'll focus on continuous learning for yourself, others and the organisation. This will help you create and maintain positive, professional and trusted working relationships with a wide range of people to get things done. Underpinning all this are principles of fairness for all and a dedication to
