Company DetailsGames Workshop might be famous for its miniatures but there is nothing small about their wargaming business model. The Nottingham-based games retailer has operating incomes of more than £12 million on a turnover of over £120 million. Games Workshop was founded in the mid 1970s by Steve Jackson, Ian Livingstone and John Peake, originally operating as a wooden board game manufacturer in London. Initially working as a mail order company from a bedroom in the capital, the big breakthrough for Games Workshop came when the company imported the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game from America. Backed by their White Dwarf magazine, Games Workshop opened their first store three years after founding and expanded rapidly during the 1980s and 1990s when role-playing games became popular in the UK. By the start of the 90s, Games Workshop was already employing over 250 members of staff. As well as retail sales assistant roles and customer service positions, Games Workshop also has a wealth of other opportunities, including roles as diverse as graphic designers, writers, IT specialists, account managers and model designers.
“We expect all staff to spend their time here helping to improve Games Workshop both commercially and socially. We also expect them continually to work on improving themselves. We believe that attitudes and personal qualities are more important than skills; for many jobs we will happily help you learn the skills you need if you bring a great attitude to your work. Some roles require professional qualifications or proven talent, but even then your attitude will be more important than your qualifications and we will often accept a less qualified person if we are impressed.” |
