Company Details

The Body Shop is a great retailer for students to work in part time jobs and for graduates to carve out a rewarding career.

The Body Shop was founded in 1976 when Anita Roddick opened her first store in Brighton. The retailer was successful from the very beginning, expanding at a rate of around 50 per cent in the early days. Just two years after the first UK store opened, The Body Shop had already started trading in Belgium, and, by 1980 had also added Austria, Canada, Greece, Iceland and Sweden to its portfolio.

The Body Shop now has operations in over 60 countries, retailing from over 3,000 stores and employing thousands of people in a multitude of roles across the whole spectrum on the business world. The retailer is now part owned by French cosmetics giant the L'Oréal Group, and, in contrast to the Brighton’s first store product range of 25 items, now retails in over 1,000 products.

If you are interested in a retail role at The Body Shop but you aren’t sure if there is a store near where you are studying then you might find the company’s online store locator very useful.

Typical in-store retail roles at The Body Shop include vacancies for Customer Consultants, Make-up Artists and Skincare Consultants. If you shine in a retail role at The Body Shop and feel like you could handle some responsibility then there are also vacancies for Assistant Managers and Store Managers at the company.

Explaining the company’s focus on staff progression from within, The Body Shop careers site says:

“We like to think of working for The Body Shop as a journey. Whether you’re a retail superstar-in-the-making or an office-based business game changer, we’ve got the development programmes to help you on your way...”

For support roles outside of stores, graduates and undergraduates might be interested in the company’s Management Training Programmes and Industrial Placements which could see strong talent progressing within either The Body Shop itself or with the L'Oréal Group.

The Management Training Programme runs for 13 months and applicants can specialise in Marketing, Supply Chain, Finance, Commercial or IT roles.

Industrial Placements at The Body Shop (or L'Oréal) are slightly shorter at 12 months, but have an even broader choice of business areas - including the disciplines covered by the Management Training Programme - but also areas such as Visual Merchandising, Digital Marketing, Copywriting and Product Development.

All of those sorts of roles at The Body Shop are based at one of the company’s offices in either London Bridge, Littlehampton or Hammersmith.

For more details about The Body Shop you can browse some of the updates that they share to their Facebook and Twitter accounts towards the left of this page. We’ve also embedded a short YouTube video about working at The Body Shop there too. Give it a watch and see if the retailer seems like the sort of place where you would like to work.
