Company Details

Like rivals Poundland and Poundworld, 99p Stores retails in goods at very low prices. Prices so low, in fact, that they don’t even cost a quid. The discount and bargain retail market is huge and has been a successful model for chains like 99p Stores.

The company has been in business since just 2001 when founder Nadir Lalani opened his first store at Holloway in London. With the help of sons Faisal and Hussain, Mr Lalani expanded his retail business to a chain of over 200 99p stores in the space of just over 10 years. The company now serves over one and a half million customers each week and boasts a turnover of more than £250 million - now, that is a whole lot of 99p items that the chain is selling each year!

So, what opportunities are available for students at local 99p Stores? Well, if you are interested in flexible hours, then your most obvious route into the company is to apply for a shop floor retail role with 99p Stores. The company doesn’t advertise these roles online, so you’ll need to pop into your nearest branch and have a chat with the management to check if there are any current vacancies and register your interest for any future opportunities that might come up. Don’t forget to take a copy of your CV along with you so that you can leave it with the manager.

If you are unsure if you have a local branch of 99p Stores near to where you are studying (or returning to for the term holidays) then run your postcode, town or city through the company’s online store locator to check for your nearest job hunting locations. Most branches of 99p Stores are still in the more southern parts of the UK, but there is an increasing number of opportunities to find full and part time retail roles at outlets opening up in the north of England too.

As a shop floor assistant at 99p Stores you will be a face of the business, so you will need to have a friendly, professional manner and a good sense of how important customer service is to the retail world - even at the bargain basement price level!
