Like Boots, Superdrug - the health, beauty and pharmacy chain - provides hundreds of full and part time jobs and temporary positions for students, graduates and other young people in the United Kingdom.
Superdrug has over 900 outlets in the UK and Ireland and employs over 15,000 members of staff. Over 200 of their outlets have a pharmacy in-store and some of them even feature nurse clinics which provide health checks to the public.
Superdrug was established in the 1960s by Ronald & Peter Goldstein when they opened their first shop at Putney in London. The brand expanded rapidly into a chain of over 300 stores just twenty years later.
It is now owned by the AS Watson Group from Hong Kong - and their beauty & health products, along with a range of services such as prescriptions, botox and laser hair removal, bring them operating profits of over £20 million in some years.
If you are interested in working at a local Superdrugs store then you can find out if there is one near where you are studying using their Store Finder. Jobs on offer in the retail element of the business include sales advisers, team leaders and higher levels of management. The company also runs a 12 month apprenticeship scheme to bring talented young people into the business at an early age.
And what do Superdrug look for in candidates for their retail jobs? Well, they can tell you better than we can....their recruitment website says that the ideal applicant will be:
“Someone who is not afraid to roll their sleeves up and muck in. Someone who will maximise sales opportunities and make sure the highest standards are maintained. Above all, we look for someone who is passionate about providing exceptional customer service.”
As well as retail jobs at Superdrug stores, there could also be opportunities for students and graduates within their pharmacies, distribution centres or at their head office in Croydon, Surrey.
Superdrug has a 12 month pre-registration programme for people interested in working in their pharmacies, but it is limited to 30 places per year - so you will need to impress throughout the application process (which closes in early June).
The main distribution for Superdrug is handled at two centres; Pontefract in Yorkshire and Dunstable in Bedfordshire. If you are studying anywhere near those two market towns then you should also see if there are any current vacancies in distribution or the warehouse facilities there too.
Head office in Croydon has the full complement of support positions you would expect, including Payroll & Finance, Logistics, IT, HR, Marketing and Health & Safety.
In addition to the typical jobs which Superdrug fills throughout the year, the company also advertises for extra staff to fill Christmas jobs in the run up to the festive period and into the New Year. As the retailer has many more customers to look after around the Christmas holidays, they need more people with good customer service skills to help them cope. Vacancies for Christmas jobs at Superdrug tend to start being advertised anywhere from September onwards.
