Company Details

The Nationwide is the biggest building society in the world, so it’s a great place to look for jobs if you fancy a career in finance. The mutual institution has over 700 branches all over the United Kingdom and employs over 19,000 members of staff.

As a ‘mutual’ society the Nationwide doesn’t have shareholders, it has members. And its members enjoy net profits of over £400 million. In one form or another, the financial institution has been around since 1846, but it wasn’t known as the ‘Nationwide Building Society’ until the 1970s.

As part of the wider Nationwide Group, the society also includes the Cheshire Building Society, the Derbyshire Building Society and the Dunfermline Building Society. However, it looks like those brand names will be phased out over the next few years.

Nationwide offers a full range of financial products and services to customers. They are a one stop shop for mortgages, personal loans, savings accounts, credit cards and insurance. Their website alone caters for almost 2 million active users, so there is certainly no shortage of work to do at the Nationwide.

The building society has its headquarters in Swindon, Wiltshire, but also has a strong admin presence in Wakefield, Northampton and Bournemouth. All of those regions will obviously have lots of different job types on offer (including contact centre jobs for over 1,000 people) but there is also a great variety of positions at Nationwide branches all across the United Kingdom.

Typical starting roles within a Nationwide branch tend to be either Customer Representatives or Personal Banking Managers. For both positions, you will need to be strong in your customer service skills. Customer reps are the meeters and greeters of Nationwide, whereas Personal Banking Managers try to find the right products for customers of the building society.

If you are only just looking to start out in a new career, then you’ll be pleased to hear that, for some of the roles at Nationwide, you do not need any previous experience of working in a financial environment. As long as you can show that you know how to deliver customers the perfect experience they expect, then Nationwide will offer you training along the way.

As well as the standard permanent and temporary finance vacancies you would expect, the Nationwide also offers internships, industrial placements, work experience opportunities, apprenticeship and dedicated graduate schemes which run for 2 to 3 years.

Graduates have a choice of two programmes at Nationwide - Specialist & Support Management or General Leadership. To apply for either of the programmes you’ll need to hold (or be on track to achieve) at least a 2:1 in your degree. You will also need to display great communication skills, motivation and genuine confidence.

Areas of finance and support roles that you might specialise in working at Nationwide include audit, fraud, retail banking, customer services, financial planning, treasury, risk management, compliance, legal, HR and marketing.
