Amazon needs no introduction in regards of what it does. There can’t be many people left on the planet who haven’t bought something through the Amazon website - and still fewer who haven’t at least heard of it. Amazon is quite simply the world’s biggest online retailer.

But how much do you know about the company behind the website? Are they purely a US business or do they offer job opportunities in the United Kingdom too?

Amazon as a whole boasts worldwide profits in excess of $50 billion and employs more than 50,000 members of staff. Not bad going for a company that was only founded in 1995! The company’s main headquarters are in Seattle, USA and their European headquarters are in Luxembourg City.

But, the good news for UK students and graduates is that Amazon do indeed have bases in Britain and Ireland, and they offer tons of jobs in a variety of roles.

Business areas at Amazon in the UK include: Retail, Kindle, Human Resources, Web Services, Media, Merchant Services, Development, Technical Operations, AmazonLocal, EU Operations, Finance, Legal, Risk Management and various support functions.

Amazon UK’s corporate office base is at Slough in Berkshire, but they also have development and media group centres in London and a further development centre in Edinburgh.

Amazon UK also has a number of ‘fulfilment centres’ where most of the packing and shipping of customer’s orders are facilitated. If you have one of these on your doorstep then you are ideally placed to find full or part time roles with Amazon.

In England, the fulfilment centres are at Doncaster, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough and Rugeley. In Scotland, they are at Dunfermline and Gourock - and there in another Amazon UK fulfilment centre at Swansea Bay in Wales.

For the Amazon Graduate Schemes (in Retail, Amazon Services, Software Development or Finance) you will need at least a 2:1 - and the company does tend to favour students with an educational background in subjects like Maths, Statistics, Business Studies, Economics or Computer Science.

As well as receiving a decent salary and the prestige of working with a retail giant, other benefits of working for Amazon UK include 25 days holiday, a cycle to work scheme and employee discounts.
