Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) sprang into life over a decade ago when three New Zealanders dreamed up a vision of a burger restaurant which would be unlike any other. In the land of the Kiwi, the burger was king – a much-revered culinary offering – and the founders of Gourmet Burger Kitchen wanted to bring the best of their burger over here.

The three Kiwis set about using top quality, fresh ingredients to serve up what they describe as ‘the best burgers in town’. Leaning on respected chefs like fellow New Zealander Peter Gordon right from the start, they concocted recipes for burgers, fries and dips that certainly have some awe!

The first Gourmet Burger Kitchen opened in Battersea, London back in 1991 and has rapidly spread to other parts of this Sceptred Isle. GBK now have restaurants in over 50 locations up and down the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. In 2010, the burger chain opened four new restaurants in London, Manchester, Nottingham and Guildford and their expansion shows no sign of slowing down.

What’s more, they are always advertising jobs which would appeal to students who want to work on a part time basis, in the evenings or at weekends.

GBK look for reliable, hard working, fun loving and passionate people to fill their jobs. They want their customers to be served by people who take as much pride in GBK burgers as they themselves do.

Typical positions on offer at GBK that would make good jobs for students are waiting staff, kitchen porters and grill chefs. No previous experience is usually required for these positions as full training will be provided by GBK. The hours and pay involved in these types of roles at GBK make them great candidates for student jobs.

What GBK are looking for in good waiting staff is people who are good with other people. If you can make customers feel like coming back to GBK time after time then you will have a decent chance of filling any of these vacancies.

As a kitchen porter, you would be providing support to the Head Chef and might even get the chance to do a bit of burger prepping yourself. The key qualities that students will need to bag one of these jobs are a readiness to learn, flexibility and the ability to function under pressure.

Grill chefs will need very similar qualities to kitchen porters. Working in the kitchen on a full or part time basis, they help to prepare sauces and then get to grill the GBK burgers.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen also have management positions and supervisory roles on offer at some restaurants which would be suitable for graduates who have some team management background.
