Obama victory 'could affect UK student intake'

Obama victory 'could affect UK student intake' Students looking for graduate jobs in London may be interested to hear that Barack Obama's presidential victory could affect the number of foreign students recruited by British universities.

The Guardian reports that institutions in the UK have benefitted from America's negative perception across the globe following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Overseas students could now opt for America as a university destination, especially since visa restrictions in the country imposed after the twin tower attack were recently lifted, the paper states.

Dominic Scott, chief executive of the UK Council for International Student Affairs, told the news provider: "The Obama success puts us into a whole new chapter and 4/11 could well be as powerful and influential as 9/11."

He added that overseas recruitment in the UK has increased over the past four or five years as increased security measures made the US far less attractive for students.

Meanwhile, tougher immigration rules will mean every overseas student will have to be fingerprinted and issued with a biometric identity card, reports the BBC.

The regulations are expected to affect between 50,000 and 60,000 students between now and March, the news provider states.
