Students looking for graduate jobs in London may be interested to hear that PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has been named the UK's number one graduate employer by the Times.

The financial services firm, which has more than 150,000 employees on its books in over 150 countries worldwide, came top of the papers yearly Graduate Recruitment Awards.

According to the news provider, PwC, which had a global revenue of £17.6 billion in 2007, has been in the top spot for five consecutive years.

The paper states that PwC is set to recruit 1,000 graduates in 2009 across all departments including assurance, strategy consulting and business recovery.

However, while accountancy firms generally receive 15 applications for every graduate vacancy, turmoil in the financial sector may put pressure on the number of positions available, the Times states.

Meanwhile the government has announced it has secured money from the European Social Fund, which will allow it to pump £27 million into retraining staff and improving skills in the UK.

The money will be spent on innovative projects that address skills shortages and provide skilled professionals such as accountants to retrain.
