Students looking for graduate jobs in London may be concerned to hear that half of university and secondary school careers advice is inadequate.

According to the Sutton Trust, a charity which campaigns for improved social mobility, schools in particular need to increase the number of disadvantaged children that make it to university.

In its latest report on the topic, the Sutton Trust states careers advice in state schools is either inadequate or inappropriate and large numbers of people who make it to university are overlooked by careers advice services.

James Turner, director of policy at the Sutton Trust, said: "The fear is that too many are making ill-informed choices early on which effectively put them out of the running for certain university choices and careers later in life."

He added that the lack of advice has a particularly strong impact on people from non-privileged backgrounds.

Meanwhile, new research from prime minster Gordon Brown's Strategy Unit shows that Labour policies have increased social mobility in the UK.

However Shadow work and pensions secretary Chris Grayling claimed the changes were "fractional" at best.
