'university is increasing social mobility'
03-Nov-2008

'University is increasing social mobility' University students looking for graduate jobs in London may be interested to hear that Labour policy is helping to improve social mobility, according to new government research.

Prime minster Gordon Brown's Strategy Unit claims that there has been a significant weakening in the link between family money and educational achievements.

However, the Conservative Party has said that the improvements were "fractional" at best, the BBC reports.

Shadow work and pensions secretary Chris Grayling said that poverty in Britain is getting worse.

And it cites research from Bristol University, the London School of Economics and the Institute of Fiscal Studies, which shows the mobility improvements only started to take effect in 2000.

Cabinet Office minister Liam Byrne told the news provider: "Despite the changes of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, social mobility didn't get moving a lot."

"Now there's a sense that since 2000 we have been making a difference," he added.

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Britain has one of the widest gaps between rich and poor of any developed nation in the western world – widening by 20 per cent between 1985 and 2005, reports the Daily Telegraph.
