'more students should study abroad'
30-Oct-2008

'More students should study abroad' More students should be encouraged to study abroad while at university, the higher education minister has said.

David Lammy told an audience at a conference on the Bologna Process - which is designed to create links between European institutions - that he wants it to become common for students to spend time in Europe during their degree.

He said: "We want to get to the point where it is as common for our students to study abroad as it is for them to move around the UK,"

"It will encourage them to become active and employable citizens," Mr Lammy added.

He claimed that studying abroad is a realistic option for a variety of students.

Meanwhile, Mr Lammy - the first black Briton to study a masters at Harvard University - said more needed to be done to address issues of equality in Britain's higher education institutions, the Daily Mirror reports.

According to the publication, he claimed that the number of black Caribbean students ending up at university had stagnated at one per cent for the last three years.
