chemical engineering shortages
30-Oct-2008

Chemical engineering shortages A lack of financial support in chemical engineering education could impact on the government's climate change plans and put firms under pressure to fill graduate jobs in London with appropriate candidates, it has been reported.

Dr David Brown, chief executive of the Institution of Chemical Engineers called on the government to increase investment in the industry or graduate intake levels will fail to meet sector demands, according to Engineering Live.

Mr Brown told the news provider that chemical engineering was on the frontline in the fight against climate change.

He claimed that despite record number choosing to study the subject "more places must be made available to meet both student and employer demand".

"We are close to reaching a point where further growth is impossible because we have neglected the capacity problems," he added.

Meanwhile, the number of Scottish students awarded university places in the country has increased by three per cent this year, according to UCAS.

The Scottish government has called the increase encouraging and a spokesperson said everyone should be given the opportunity to further themselves at a higher education institution, reports the Press Association.
