'Graduate recruitment continues as normal'

29 Oct 2008

'Graduate recruitment continues as normal' University leavers worried about the lack of graduate jobs in London may be interested to hear that for many employers it is "business as usual", it has been reported.

According to Martin Birchall, managing director of the High Fliers research firm, job vacancies have dropped by one per cent despite the continuing economic downturn, according to the Times.

Mr Birchall told the paper: "Graduate recruitment is not about filling vacancies for next September, it's about hiring people who can start training next September and become useful when they finish in two or three years' time."

He added that the public sector is set to increase recruitment by 20 per cent, the armed forces by ten per cent and the retail sector by three or four per cent.

Meanwhile the number of accepted offers at financial services firm Deloitte, which is based in London, has risen by almost 50 per cent when compared with figures from last year, the news provider states.

In related news, 80 per cent of job applicants are turning to online recruitment to find their next job, according to research from Job Site.
