University leavers struggling to find graduate jobs in London are turning to the legal profession for shelter, it has been claimed.

According to the Lawyer, the number of students enrolling on Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) courses at the College of Law and BPP Law School has increased by more than 20 per cent.

The UK's two biggest legal schools claim the current financial crisis is pushing graduates toward a career in law, the news provider states.

Peter Crisp, dean at BPP, which saw a 23 per cent increase in enrolments on its London-based course, told the website: "In light of the current economic climate, graduates see law as a safe haven."

"We've seen an increase in graduates converting to a career in law rather than continuing into other professions like banking," he added.

The GDL, which is designed and taught by legal professionals, teaches would-be lawyers how to apply law in practice and emphasises the importance of commercial awareness.

According to the College of Law, the conversion course can be studied part-time and is the perfect stepping stone to a successful legal career.
