Government and business to boost IT skills in UK A new scheme launched by the government is hoping to combat the skills shortage being experienced in the IT sector.

It has unveiled plans for a new National Skills Academy for IT, as part of an overall £30 million network to build academies for enterprise, power and social care alongside institutions for IT.

The centre, which will be run by technology industry lobby group e-skills, is scheduled for a first intake of students in 2009.

Gordon Brown said that National Skills Academies "are a vital part of the UK's future".

"Thanks to these four new academies, the fields of Enterprise, Power, IT and Social Care will start to see the benefits of trainees who will start their careers with the skills and experience employers need," added the Prime Minister.

Computerweekly.com recently reported that people with the right IT knowledge should "face little difficulty" finding a job.

Simon Walker, from recruitment firm Project Partners, told the site there was a demand for IT staff in the financial services sector.
