Postgraduate students in the UK should receive the same funding as undergraduates, according to the National Union of Students (NUS).
According to the BBC, postgraduate students have limited options as the government-backed student loans are not available to them.
However, the government said its priority is to get school leavers through university and the current set-up for the funding of postgraduate study is adequate.
Aaron Porter, vice-president for higher education at the NUS, told the BBC: "The government, if it claims that postgraduate study is important, and it does, needs to ensure a fairer funding system to support students."
"I think a student loan system would be a better mechanism to ensure that happens," he added.
Meanwhile, research carried out by the NUS,and HBOS found that students spend an average of £4,900 a year on accommodation and £3,145 on tuition fees while they are studying.
Through the Students Loans Company, undergraduates are entitled to borrow 100 per cent of their tuition fee costs and only have to start repaying the loan once they earn more than £15,000.
