A new proposal by the Conservatives could see ex-soldiers being given free teacher training.

The scheme would involve servicemen who take up post-graduate courses receiving funding of up to £9,000.

Participants' job searches could be aided by having tuition fees for their first degree paid for.

Michael Gove, shadow schools secretary, is set to make an announcement about the plans at the Conservative party's conference today.

He is expected to comment that those eligible for the help are "heroes who deserve our thanks".

According to the Guardian he will also state: "That is why a Conservative government will honour their service by guaranteeing them the right to free university education."

The party claims 70 per cent of those leaving the armed forces at sergeant level or higher state they want to take up training roles, but only 68 did so in the last year.

In America the Troops to Teachers scheme offers servicemen the opportunity to take part in graduate training.
