school to scrap homework
29-Sep-2008

School to scrap homework The UK's biggest school is set to extend its opening hours and scrap homework, it has been reported.

Nottingham East academy, which will be responsible for more than 3,500 pupils, claims it will be the first school in the country to scrap homework, according to the Times.

The new academy will drop homework in favour of tagging an extra lesson onto the end of the school day as well as offering additional after-school activities, the paper states.

Barry Day, principal of the new academy, told the Times: "Homework causes an enormous amount of home conflict and parents and the community certainly won't mind children coming home later."

Meanwhile, homework for primary school pupils has been condemned by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), the news provider claims.

According to the ATL, homework for primary children should be scrapped as it results in less wealthy pupils resenting the school.

In related news, losses in the City could provide a boom in the number of bankers and graduates looking for teaching jobs, according to the BBC.

The news provider claims research by the Training and Development Agency for Schools shows a 13 per cent increase in the number of people taking up teaching.
