26 Sep 2008

Finance workers 'take on teacher training' The economic downturn is causing bankers to reconsider their career path and re-train to become teachers, it has been reported.

According to the BBC, research by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDAS) shows there has been a 13 per cent increase in the number of people interested in taking-up teaching.

The news provider states the TDAS has started targeting finance workers in the City in an attempt to find potential recruits for a career in teaching.

Meanwhile, the number of teaching vacancies in Norfolk is falling as record numbers of jobs are filled by university graduates.

According to the Norwich Evening News, the amount of teachers in the county has increased more than 500 since 1997 to 6,460.

Steve Hardy, teacher recruitment and retention strategy manager with Norfolk County Council, told the paper: "We work extremely hard to attract teachers to Norfolk and have very positive relationships with providers of teacher training in Norfolk and Suffolk."

He added the council maintains close contact with graduate teacher training programmes and universities to ensure vacancies were filled.
