Teaching 'more appealing than banking for graduates'

23 Sep 2008

Teaching 'more appealing than banking for graduates' Teaching is the third most popular career path for graduates after investment banking and a job in the media, according to the Times.

And according to a study carried by the Times, many graduates think teaching in a challenging school is more rewarding than joining City firm Goldman Sachs, the news provider claims.

James Darley, director of graduate recruitment at Teach First, which encourages graduates to take up teaching, told the Times: "Graduates are now saying that teaching in a challenging secondary school is one of the most prestigious things I can do."

He added: "If you are not sure what you want to do with your life then Teach First is an ideal programme."

Meanwhile, an annual survey of teaching jobs in England and Wales found that just 32 per cent of applicants for head teacher jobs were women – a drop of eight per cent, according to Associated Free Press.

Commenting on the fall, the head of the Association of School and College Leaders John Dunford said the government must address the issue immediately, the news provider reports.
