London is not the only centre of advertising open to graduates, it has emerged.

In an interview with the Newcastle Journal, marketer Howard Tait explained how his company was a success in the advertising world despite being based in Teeside rather than the capital.

After completing a business studies degree at Lancaster University and a postgraduate marketing qualification at Kingston University, Mr Tait worked in London.

Taking a place on the Philips brand marketing graduate scheme, Mr Tait told the news provider he had learnt a lot of skills, which was "terrific".

He explained that while working as a freelancer "there just seemed the opportunities in London for graduates".

"I never even thought of getting a job in marketing in Newcastle. In my field - advertising, marketing, creative services - you had to go away. I think it was the best thing I ever did really," Mr Tait added.

However, in setting up his agency MTR, Mr Tait has proved that people will look for firms outside of the capital, with 75 per cent of the company's work over the last decade coming from outside London.
