A Welsh university will start research into the causes and effects of workplace bullying tomorrow (September 20th).

The new programme, which will be launched at the House of Lords, is the first of its kind in the UK.

Carried out by the Centre for Research on Workplace Behaviours at the University of Glamorgan, the ongoing investigation will attempt to address the serious matter that is workplace bullying.

Professor Michael Sheehan, co-director of the department, said: "Such behaviours do little to contribute to organisational loyalty, or commitment."

"The centre aims to advance understanding of relationships and behaviours on a local, national and international level," he added.

According to a YouGov poll commissioned by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), workplace bullying is an issue for 21 per cent of staff in the UK, with 3.5 million people admitting to being bullied in their current job.

The TUC secretary general Brendan Barber said that the level of bullying uncovered by the study is unacceptable and claimed zero-tolerance anti-bullying policies should be introduced at every organisation to curb the problem.
