Oxford and Cambridge have launched fund raising campaigns so they can offer bursaries to the brightest students, according to a news report.

Emulating rich American universities, the pair are planning to fund research students throughout their education, the Independent reports.

The move follows research by the Fair Investment Company, which conclude 230,000 students left university in debt this year.

According to the Independent, a fifth of students are post-graduates and the number of people studying at degree level has increased over the last ten years, meaning more competition for graduate jobs in London.

However, the number of doctorates being awarded to science students in the UK has dropped by eight per cent in the same period, the paper reports.

"High quality postgraduates from all over the world are vital to preserving the university's status as a leading global research university," a spokesperson from Oxford University told the news provider.

Recent research published by Oxford University raises the question of ethics in the 21st century.

According to Professor Julian Savulescu, director of the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, the pace of technology is likely to outstrip the pace of reflection on it.
