uk university's 'failing to keep pace'
11-Sep-2008

UK University's 'failing to keep pace' UK universities are failing to keep up with the rest of the world in terms of the number of students they admit, according to new research.

A new study by the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) showed that while university admissions have increased in the last few years the UK is being left behind.

The Daily Telegraph reports that in 2000 three countries were ahead of the UK in terms of the number of school leavers going on to attend university, but Britain has now dropped to 12th place in an international university league table.

Andreas Schleicher, head of the OECD's indicators and analysis division, told the paper: "In relative terms, the world has moved much faster [than the UK]."

He added that despite huge efforts by the British government, the growth in skills in the UK had been "moderate".

Research by the OECD also showed that Britain had some of the largest primary school classes in the developed world, with 26 pupils in the average class.

Only Japan, Korea and Turkey had more crowded classrooms, according to the organisation.
