The marketing of American universities is getting more competitive as they try to attract more students, according to the Guardian.
Visa restrictions that were put in place after the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center have been lifted and universities are taking advantage by targeting overseas students, reports the paper.
According to the International Education's Open Doors Report, there was a two per cent increase in the number of British students studying in America last year.
Norman Renshaw, the managing director of InTuition Languages, told the paper that American universities can trawl recruitment fairs looking for high-caliber graduates or they can "offer scholarships to students with the right kind of profile".
According to the Independent, a new matched-funding scheme from the government is encouraging higher education providers to take on US-style funding initiatives and encourage ex-students and staff to donate cash to their old university.
Sir Michael Bichard, rector of the University of the Arts London, told the paper: "Our mindset has got to change if we're going to be world-class and competitive."
