Jobseekers looking for jobs in IT management need good interpersonal skills to get ahead, according to a recruitment firm.
A study by Hays found that technical knowledge and IT experience are not enough for candidates looking to break into IT management.
Some 94 per cent of directors surveyed by the agency said that more than just intelligence and technical ability was needed to give career-minded individuals a chance at a managerial position.
James Lloyd Townshend, managing director of Hays, said: "You need a proven track record and be up to date with the direction of technology, but you need to think strategically, give clear direction and engage with people."
According to Reading University, interpersonal skills include the ability to negotiate, support and encourage colleagues and the ability to give and receive constructive criticism.
The university claims that these overlap with spoken communication skills, which it claims can be developed in seminar discussions, personal tutorials and at conferences.
The Open University claims that the most important aspects of successful management involve interpersonal skills and good communication.
