Spam is 'costing recruitment firms'

03 Sep 2008

Spam is 'costing recruitment firms' Sifting through email spam costs the average recruitment firm £392 a year in lost productivity - for every worker the company employs.

According to new research from computer support specialists Ulysses IT, preventing spam is a good way to get more out of staff, as employees spend time reading and deleting the unwanted messages, reports OnRec.com.

Technical director Peter Turner told the recruitment news site: "There's no way to stop spam, but it's fairly easy to deal with it more effectively.

"If employees don't have to see spam, they won't have to waste time deleting it," he added,

Research by Cambridge University computer scientist Dr Richard Clayton showed that the initial letters of an email address has a direct effect on the amount of spam a person gets piling up in their inbox, reports News.co.au.

After analysing more than half a billion spam messages, Dr Clayton found that email addresses starting with the letter Q or Z received an average of 20 per cent spam, compared with the 40 per cent received by users with an email address starting with the letters A, M R, P or S.
