'perception of it threatens economy'
28-Aug-2008

'Perception of IT threatens economy' Students' perception of IT studies could threaten the British economy as fewer people take on IT courses at university.

The sector skills council has called for changes to be made to IT education to sustain interest in (of)the subject into higher education.

IT graduates looking for work may be interested to hear that the number of students taking an ICT subject at A-level fell by eight per cent in 2007.

The number of people studying ICT at GCSE also plummeted, dropping by 14 per cent to 85,600.

Margaret Sambell, director of strategy at e-Skills UK, said: "We believe that a radical review of the technology curriculum in schools is essential."

She added that the curriculum needed to be attractive to students and be "valued for progression to university and to employment".

In related news, the university of Abertay in Dundee offers students an MSc in ethical hacking, claiming it will give post-graduate students a "detailed knowledge of electronic attacks", reports the Press Association.

According to the newswire, the university claims that graduates could earn up to £60,000 a year within two years of completing the course.
