23 Aug 2008

Part-time jobs 'important for students' Part-time jobs are important to students, with over 70 per cent claiming they work to cover basic living expenses.

The suitable number of hours that students should work has been debated but the National Union of Student (NUS) claims it depends on your course demands, reports the Times.

They also warn that students should be careful the number hours as some students can find it hard to balance employment and studies.

Students should consider what type of work they do and the type of hours. Night work may suit some students rather then others.

Most UK universities now support students in gaining part-time employment while they study and many have a jobshop.

These usually cater for students only and therefore make searching for a part-time job easier. Most will offer students help and support with their CV and interview technique.

The newspaper is not advising students to apply for jobs before term starts to ensure that they get the pick of the crop.

Students have the same rights as any other workers and should be paid at least the minimum wage, which is £4.77 an hour from October if you are aged 18-21 or £5.73 if you are older.
