Gap Year Job News

gap years 'are changing'

Gap years 'are changing' Gap year travel is changing as the credit crunch hits many students across the UK, according to latest reports.

A poll commissioned by social networking site, Bebo, has revealed that students are cutting back the amount of time that they spend abroad.

Worryingly, financial difficulties are meaning that more young people are willing to risk their personal safety by travelling to countries considered to be dangerous.

So-called dangerous countries include Kenya, Columbia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela, with travellers telling lies about their destination so as not to worry family.

Some eight per cent of travellers questioned said that they are planning trips to these 'risky destinations' in the next year

Almost 30 per cent of travellers said that they are going it alone, with the average age of gap-year students now at 23.

Just over 60 per cent of gap-year travellers said that they were planning to be away for a maximum of six months.

Figures show that average spending on a gap year is around £4,000, with many attempting to make do with between £1,000 and £3,000.

In order to fund a gap year, many students are now deciding to take on part-time employment when they reach university.
