new diplomas 'give choice'
21-Aug-2008

New diplomas 'give choice' New diplomas are about expanding choice, according to one careers advisor from Connexions.

Maggie Cowan claims that for "far too long" students have had limited options and some people had failed to achieve due to this reason.

She added that some people in education will benefit from the new qualifications as it might enable them to perform better.

"It's not a reflection of their intelligence, but perhaps a reflection on their motivation and effort. People like that might benefit from a different style of learning," she concluded.

The diploma will offer young people the chance to study in education institutions as well as putting them in workplaces in an aim to get a taste of working life.

Next month 20,000 students nationwide will start studying for such qualifications.

According to data published by the Joint Council for Qualifications, GCSE results in 2007 showed a 0.4 per cent increase at grades A star - A minus compared to the previous year, while a 0.9 per cent increase in A*-C was also recorded.

The number of GCSE entries for 2007 was 5,827,319.
