Gap years are a popular way of students' broadening their horizons and experiences, one expert is claiming.

Margaret Noble, pro-vice chancellor of Greenwich University, maintains she has seen many postgraduates who take gap years benefit from enriched experiences.

"I think many students take a gap year to broaden their horizons and experiences and some students use it to provide financial backing," she explained.

Resaerch by gapyear.com found that employers and recruitment agencies are increasingly taking gap-year experience into account when considering applicants as grades have left candidates appearing indistinguishable on paper.

The University and College Union learned that students are underestimating their living costs by around £450 at a time when student debt is reaching record levels - suggesting that many more will have to consider part-time employment.

Meanwhile, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (Rec) recently urged students to think long and hard about how best to demonstrate they have the skills needed and the drive to engage with the business they are applying to.

According to a study by Natwest, record numbers of students are working through their full-time degree courses to support their time at university.
