Students who work part-time for local authorities to support their studies could be interested to hear council staff in Scotland will walk out of their workplaces in just over a week.

Members of the Unison and colleagues from GMB and Unite will take part in a 24-hour strike on August 20th in a row over a below-inflation pay off.

Dougie Black, the union's head of local government for Scotland, said: "Members are angry that the employers want to lock them into 2.5 per cent increases for the next three years, while inflation is still rising and is set to continue."

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said the increasing costs of essentials like fuel, food and housing approaching double figures would force many to compromise on life necessities.

This has left local government workers with no option but to strike, he added.

Mr Black concluded there is a one-week window of opportunity to avoid the "disruptive strikes" which he hopes the employers take.

Last month, Unite and Unison took part in two-day strikes after rejecting initial below-inflation pay offers of 2.45 per cent.
