The number of graduate positions up for grabs is something companies will pay attention to during the summer months, one union has claimed.

According to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (Rec),,following the economic downturn firms will be deciding how many graduates they will be looking to recruit over the summer.

Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the union, said the job market is a complex thing and some sectors - particularly the public sector - are continuing to hire as normal.

"It's quite difficult to tell how things will develop now as traditionally people don't hire over the summer, but I think we will start to see in September/October the extent to which the economic uncertainty is starting to hit new recruits," she added.

The Nationwide Consumer Confidence Index for July, released in partnership with TNS, found consumer confidence tumbled to a new record low last month amid fears the UK economy could be heading for a recession.

Levels dropped to 51 per cent in July from 61 per cent the previous month and consumer confidence dipped by 18 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) Graduate Recruitment Summer Review found the student employment market was surviving the current financial climate despite gloomy forecasts.

It found grad vacancies are growing with a rise a 11.7 per cent compared to 2007 figures.
