Open Source 'helps grads'
The increasing use of open-source software in higher education establishments such as schools and colleges helps graduate employees make a seamless transition over to the world of work, one commentator has claimed.
Dana Blankenhorn wrote on a ZDnet blog that modern business disciplines can be based on open-source software while at school, such as marketing to support operations.
"The idea that you can model the job you want, and actually do much of it, before you seek a job, this border between school and work will get fuzzier-and-fuzzier," he added.
He concluded this is particularly true in business school as many pupils launch internet start-ups within a year of graduation or before, he concluded.
It was claimed last week by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (Rec) that students need to think about the type of experience that will help them stand out on the graduate job market.
Anne Fairweather, the Rec's head of public policy, said more and more graduate employers are looking for something else in candidates apart from a degree.
