750,000 students 'to work part-time'

08 Aug 2008

750,000 students 'to work part-time' Nearly half of the UK student population will be in part-time employment by the start of the 2008/09 academic year, it is claimed.

The Natwest Student Living Index 2008 revealed three-quarters of a million undergraduates will be working part-time jobs by the end of the summer break.

In total part-time student workers will earn more than £2 billion during the course of the year as more than two out of every five will have to pay their own way through university.

The study also found almost 25,000 more undergrads took part-time work in 2008 than the previous year.

Mark Worthington, head of student banking at the lender, said students are becoming increasingly aware of the wider economic climate and as a result this is affecting which university they choose to go to.

"We believe in equipping students with the money management skills they need before they even get to university. Drawing up a budget can take ten minutes but will help you make the most of your money for the whole academic year," he added.

Meanwhile, fast-food giant McDonald's announced this week it is launching a employment campaign to recruit another 4,000 staff due to a surge in demand.
