Students working on one-year internships in industry could be interested to hear that sickness absence could be reduced thanks to employers help through rehabilitation, it has been claimed.

New governmental research has found that 90 per cent of workers with health problems could be helped to return to work if their firms adopt a few principles of good health care and work place management.

Evidence from the review - entitled Vocational Rehabilitation: What works, for whom, and when? - found early interventions such as work-focused healthcare tailored to meet individual needs and an accommodating, proactive workplace approach to support the return to work are key steps.

Commenting on the review, work and pensions secretary James Purnell said the government's radical proposals to reform the welfare system are designed to ensure people go back to work when they are able to.

"This evidence shows working can be an important step in people's recovery. We are looking at how we can work with employers to make sure people get the support they need in the workplace," he added.

Additional research conducted by the University of York and the Institute for Employment Studies has found with the right support people with mental health problems can get back into work and for many a job might help with their recovery.
