Students who are looking for part-time work to support their studies at university could be interested to hear that fast-food giant McDonald's is set to create 4,000 jobs nationwide as it responds to a huge surge in demand.

The new McJobs programme aims to serve the extra two million customers the company has been seeing walk through its doors in 2008 compared to last year.

According to the firm, its takings have boomed by ten per cent during the first half of this year citing improvements to the menu, refurbishments of its restaurants and free Wi-Fi as reasons for the growth.

The new jobs will boost the firm's workforce by six per cent and come at a time when many employers are being criticised for cutting jobs in response to the economic downturn.

David Fairhurst, chief people officer at McDonald's UK and northern Europe, said it is the right time to step forward and celebrate the McJobs offered at the firm.

"This campaign is an important milestone in the evolution of McDonald's recruitment advertising - signalling a more confident and assertive attitude towards the McJob term," he added.

In related news, a recent study by Natwest found that record numbers of students are taking part-time jobs to support their studies.
