Students working as temps in order to support their studies at university could be interested to hear business chiefs have been issued a stern warning not to use the current financial climate as an excuse for making mass redundancies, it has been reported.
According to Personneltoday.com, senior business bosses have warned that firms may have to axe hundreds of jobs this year without so much as union scrutiny due to pressures stemming from the economic slowdown.
KPMG's quarterly survey, released last week, found more than half (53 per cent) of private and public executives plan to reduce their numbers of staff compared to 29 per cent saying so in the first quarter.
Roger Jeary, director of research at employment union Unite, told the website: "When employers seek to use an economic slowdown as an excuse for job cuts, they should be assured that we will defend members to the hilt, and that we have the resources to do it."
Harvey Reid, a partner at Laceys Solicitors, told the site he believes it is possible firms will axe a number of jobs and wonders if the unions will be able to "cope with the resulting flood of cases".
In related news, it was reported by the Bolton News yesterday (August 4th) that workers at the Royal Mail's Farnworth sorting office claim 600 hundred jobs are set to be axed at the site.
