Unusual careers increasing

01 Aug 2008

Unusual careers increasing There has been an increase in the number of unusual jobs, which may be of interest to those planning unconventional graduate careers.

Jobs such as badger consultants, dog psychologists, embalmers and feng shui experts have been discovered by insurance firm Hiscox.

The company found there has been an increase in the number of people making a living doing tasks such as validating paintings, setting up kitchens for celebrity chef programmes and examining construction sites for noise problems.

It was also revealed that unusual jobs have similar risks to normal careers, with demanding customers causing a fuss if everything is not to their satisfaction.

Gary Head, director of business insurance at Hiscox, commented: "It is unfortunately all too easy to imagine a customer suing their dog psychologist if their dog continues to eat their slippers, or somebody taking their feng shui consultant to court if they're not happy with their home's energies."

In a BBC debate on unusual jobs, readers revealed they had careers such as gold-plating fountain pens, stand-in choir singing and hacking into banks' computer systems.
