Environmentally-conscious students about to embark upon a one-year gap year in industry could be interested to hear employers now rank energy efficiency ahead of other types of cost-cutting, it has been reported.

A recent Carbon Trust survey of business chiefs found more than half said they look to save money with energy-efficiency methods rather than through redundancies or trimming staff bonuses, according to Personneltoday.com.

The trust also found UK businesses could save nearly £2.5 billion over the course of the next year by enforcing green measures.

Solutions director at the Carbon Trust, Hugh Jones, told the publication more than £7 million is wasted every day because of firms' poor energy efficiency.

He added: "Our research shows that energy efficiency measures, not job cuts or salary freezes, are the cost-cutting steps businesses are considering first during this economically challenging time."

It is an encouraging sign that companies are wising up to the fact cutting carbon and going green is the easiest way to make a business lean, he concluded.

The Carbon Trust was set up in 2001 by the government as an independent company with the mission to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy by working with firms to reduce carbon emissions.
