Students who care for disabled children and parents that are worried about being discriminated against in their part-time workplace might be interested to hear a European court ruling has just given more rights to carers.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that London-based Attridge Law discriminated against legal secretary Sharon Coleman because of her disabled child.

Welcoming yesterday's (July 17th) decision, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) described it as a victory for all parents and carers who look after disabled children and adults.

Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said employers now need to examine their workplace policies to ensure they do not discriminate against staff with disabled family members.

"Sharon Coleman's employer took too narrow a view of the UK's disability discrimination laws and the ECJ has rightly decided the protection of the law must now extend to carers and anyone associated with disabled people," he added.

Meanwhile, earlier in the month Sheffield magistrate's court ruled in favour with workers as it fined the city's Jackson's butchers shop for failing to pay the national minimum wage.
